Current Cataloguing

DSS performs derived and original cataloguing for all library resources, including foreign language and non-book materials, using Dewey or Library of Congress classification and Library of Congress or National Library of Canada, Répertoire de vedettes-matière or Sears subject headings. Libraries have the option of submitting photocopies of the title pages and versos, shelflist or publisher advice cards, publisher invoices or even the items themselves.

DSS cataloguers use the latest revision of AACR2 and MARC21 manuals as the standards for cataloguing and coding. Depending on customer requirements, DSS follows authorities for names, subjects and series as established by LC, including the LC Annotated Card Program headings, or NLC. DSS uses either RVM or NLC authorities for French language materials. DSS assigns non-fiction call numbers using the latest editions of the Dewey (both Abridged and Unabridged) or LC classification schedules.
